Know the Causes, Symptoms , Treatment and Prevention of Anemia

Low number of red blood cells or hemoglobin is known as Anemia. It leads to insufficient supply of oxygen to our different body organs. Hemoglobin is the protein in the red blood cells essential for circulation oxygen in our body. Lower count of red blood cells makes our body tired and weak. Anemia can be temporary or permanent and can range from severe to mild in nature. There are different types of Anemia like- Anemia with iron deficiency, Aplastic anemia, Sickle Cell anemia, Vitamin deficiency anemia and Thalassemia.

Causes of Anemia

Anemia is caused because of various reasons which include:

Iron deficiency anemia: This kind of anemia is caused due to low iron in body. With inadequate iron, production of hemoglobin gets affected in the body. Pregnant women are most likely to get anemia. Blood loss during menstrual bleeding and cancer can also cause this type of anemia.

Aplastic anemia: Aplastic anemia is caused due to little or no production of blood cells. The condition makes your body tired and prone to infection and diseases along with uncontrolled bleeding. The rare condition can develop at any age and requires blood transfusion or stem cell transplant as treatment.

Sickle Cell Anemia: This condition is caused due to a disease called sickle cell which leads to insufficient production of red blood cells to circulate oxygen. The condition is called sickle cell as the red blood cells produced are in shape of sickle or crescent moon which gets stuck in small blood vessels, slowing the supply of blood to body parts.

Vitamin Deficiency Anemia: When the supply of certain vitamins like folate, Vitamin B-12 and vitamin C, are lower in our body, it causes vitamin deficiency anemia. Vitamins are essential for healthy red blood cells formation. Intakes of diet rich in these vitamins help alleviate this form of anemia. Celiac disease or excess consumption of alcohol can also cause Vitamin Deficiency Anemia.

Thalassemia: It is a genetic imbibed condition which leads our body to produce less hemoglobin which enables supply of oxygen. It is caused due to mutation in the DNA of cells responsible for making hemoglobin which further leads to anemia.

Symptoms of Anemia

  • Feeling tired or fatigue throughout the day
  • Dizziness and headache
  • Pale skin
  • Shortness of breath
  • Joint pain or chest pain
  • Irregular heartbeats

Treatment of Anemia

Intake of supplements or diet rich in folate, iron, Vitamin Bp-12, Vitamin C are helpful in treating iron and vitamin deficiency anemia. In case of severe anemia, visit a doctor for the best suited treatment. The doctor may prescribe supplement or might also advise blood transfusion, stem cell transplant or bone marrow replacement.

To diagnose the disease the doctor may ask you about your family history related to the disease or prescribe you blood test to get the complete blood count details. Additional tests can be prescribed to confirm the cause.

Prevention of Anemia

  • Many forms of anemia could be prevented in case you maintain a healthy and balanced diet. Consume foods rich in iron, folate, Vitamin B-12 and vitamin C like- beans, lentils, green leafy vegetables, orange, cereals, rice, kidney beans, broccoli, tomatoes, berries, melons and soy products.
  • Drink in limit to avoid vitamin deficiency anemia
  • Avoid exposure to toxic chemicals in case of aplastic anemia
