Fever: Prevention and Management

A fever is a condition when the body’s temperature rises above 37 degree Celsius. Fever is quite common in our lives and can be caused due to several reasons. Fever is not an illness but a sign that signifies that some harmful bacteria or virus have entered our body. Hypothalamus- a part of the brain is the thermostat of the body and defines the body temperature depending on the health condition of the body. At times our body shows high temperature because of our immune system fighting with any foreign substance in our body like when we consume any new drug or in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. In many cases, body temperature increases in women during menstrual cycle.

What is Conditions Causing Fever ?

There can be a variety of causes for fever, ranging from common cold and flu, viral or bacterial infection, influenza, Urinary Tract Infection, pneumonia, tuberculosis, etc. Checking temperature by touching the skin is not a reliable indicator to detect or confirm fever. It’s advised to use digital thermometers which are easily available in medical stores to get the accurate body temperature. In case of persistent fever, please consult a doctor.

Some other conditions which can trigger fever or rise in body temperature include- Viral Fever, Malaria, Dengue Fever, Typhoid, Leptospirosis and chikunguniya.

Testing Fever

Fever could be examined through use of thermometers. Physicians examine fever through physical examination of the body, which includes examination of eyes, nose, ears, chest, abdomen etc, in a bid to identify the real cause behind fever. 

Further, fever could be detected through blood tests, urine analysis or urine culture, stool culture, testing for tuberculosis, X-Rays and special tests for systematic disease and auto immune issues.

Managing Fever

Fever can only be alleviated when the actual reason of fever and other symptom is detected. Usually Paracetamol tablets provide relief during fever, but it is better to consult a doctor before consuming any medicines. Depending on the severity of the fever doctors prescribe antibiotics to decrease the infection.

Consuming plenty of fluids works best to lower body temperature due to fever. It is advised not to take cool bath in case of fever. Instead, use wet sponge to clean the body. You can also put wet piece of cloth on forehead to reduce high fever. Make sure you wring out the excess water from the cloth before application.

Prevention

Fever can be prevented by:

  • Washing hands at intervals or after touching dirty surface
  • Covering mouth and nose while traveling
  • Prevent breeding of mosquitoes in your area. Prevent mosquito bites.
  • Maintain distance with person suffering from contagious disease and viral infection
