What is Urea Breath Test lab test

Urea Breath Test is done to diagnose a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), that may cause ulcer (in stomach and duodenum) and infect the stomach. The bacteria produce an enzyme which breaks urea into carbon dioxide and ammonia. During the procedure, the patient is made to swallow a tablet that contains urea. Further, the amount of carbon dioxide exhaled by the patient is measure which helps indicate presence of the bacteria in stomach.
